Colossal spiders with unfathomable strength and an unnatural durability that have given more than one dragon pause. While they are one of the few monsters that can actually challenge a dragon, Baels are stubbornly territorial, almost like oversized versions of their less-nightmarish, garden-dwelling kin; they often make their homes in crumbling ruins or hollowed-out underground lairs, such as former Taguel warrens or cave systems. Fully grown Baels almost never work in groups, but often have massive broods of skittering children at their command, ranging from tiny creatures only a few inches across to beasts as large as an ox. Broodmothers themselves range from the size of a carriage to as large as a house, and whispered rumors hint at even larger creatures.
Given how strongly territorial and nightmarishly difficult to dislodge they are, Bael lairs range across Elibe, including dragon territory - though they rarely venture out to cause serious trouble, settling for preying on livestock and humans; depending on how affronted nearby dragons are by their mere presence, this may lead to either an impressive battle - generally won by the dragon, but often at great personal cost - or resentful co-existence. Baels in human territory act similarly, but tend to be more brazen about their feeding habits. Taguel and Baels simply do not coexist - either the Broodmother and her swarm exterminates the inhabitants of the warren and moves in, or is herself slain and her children mercilessly butchered.
Baels tend to prioritize Strength, Skill, and Defense, making them disquietingly similar to dragons in combat, though they are generally more vulnerable to magical attacks.
