The seeds of war have been growing for twenty years now, a direct result of a treaty that traded a small territory in western Actona, inhabited by Ibians and Actonians alike for centuries with all the territorial disputes that would suggest, in return for lowered tariffs on trade between the two kingdoms, as well as lowered rates on spices for the Actonian monarch's table. The majority of Actonian citizens were against the deal from the start, a major part of what finally lit the spark that blazed into the fires of revolution, but Ibium's growing concern over a more warlike Actona has led to the exploration and initial construction of a northern trade route that would bypass Actona entirely, instead moving through their northern neighbor, Ormur.
Faced with the loss of both their territory and a significant portion of their national income, Actona is demanding the immediate cessation of the new trade route as well as the return of all territory belonging to them - as well as a formal apology for breaking the terms of their agreement. Ibium, in turn, holds the position that the deal never included trade routes, and refuses to recognize the legitimacy of the military coup in the first place. With neither side willing to capitulate and neighboring kingdoms leery of interfering with the ongoing dispute, negotiations have effectively broken down completely, with the Actonian army massing at its border as Ibian mercenaries move to intercept. Further exacerbating the issue, recent economic sanctions levied by Ibium, a last-ditch effort to force Actona back to negotiations, have left Actona unable to afford its oversized army and several major infrastructure upgrade projects, leaving them with little option but to fight or lose all that they have earned in the last decade.
Players are hired as mercenaries for either country, and must complete missions from a unique list for each faction in order to give their side an advantage. These vary from straight combat to sabotage to last-minute diplomacy with neighboring countries, and will help set up the actual battle, which will itself come with a new set of missions. Each mission window will last for one month, and those who finish their chosen task within that timeframe will get a hefty gold reward; excelling in both pools will leave you eligible to be one of the two people who will receive a Lordship from your chosen country in return for your support, which will grant your character power within that country as well as the option to petition for access to their standing military and protection.
Missions not taken by players will resolve on their own, and failing to complete one will lead to it resolving in a way that is unsatisfactory for your chosen power, as well as ensuring you do not receive the gold reward. Take history into your own hands and help shape the course of battle if you wish to be remembered for it.
Further details, from mission rules to the missions themselves and more details on Lordships, will be posted on Monday the 17th when the first phase of the event officially begins!
