Nocturne's human class system is a slightly-reworked take on normal Fire Emblem progression. You start by choosing a weapon, and then choosing one of the attached Basic classes - Swords gives you access to Myrmidon, Mercenary, and Guard. Once you reach 200 posts in that class, you can choose one of 3-4 promotion options based on which weapon type you want to unlock; a Sword user who wants Axes becomes a Hero. Elite classes are unique upgrades attached to each Advanced class, offering a more impressive name and additional level progression; Heroes will always upgrade to Champions. You still follow these rules when creating a Pre-Promoted character, and thus need to define what class path your character took.
Note that any Basic or Advanced class can spend 1000 gold to swap to another class of the same tier and will grow normally from there, but Elite classes cannot change class. Also note that weapon specialization classes (Swordmaster, Berserker, Halberdier, Sniper) receive a free basic (aka non-magic/heroic) weapon of their choice upon promoting to that class (Basic->Advanced) from their primary weapon type - anything from Iron to Killer. Only the class's default weapon type qualifies; Mastery does not allow you to pick other types of weapons.

Acolyte - (usually) pious magicians who pass judgement with blasts of consecrated light
Shaman - initiates of the dark arts who attack with living shadows and congealed darkness
