"Hmmmm," Talon said as he paced the small cavern he was in. He had several books in his hand and those that weren't there were strewn all over the place. "Fire beats wind, wind eats thunder, thunder creams fire. Right?" He scribbled something into the notebook he was carrying. "Right, now on to the task at hand." He tossed the notebook over his shoulder and send it flying dangerously close to the fire smouldering a few feet away. Which is to say, it landed in the fire.
"Now what in the blazes do these blasted runes mean?!" Talon said rather loudly, scouring the remaining book in his hand. He glared up at the wall. "Book... key... door... cabbage?" He frowned and looked back at the book. "Why is this so hard, you'd think if someone made a door they'd want you to be able to open it." He mumbled the words over and over for what could have been ten minutes or five hours depending on who you asked, but in the end he-
"Blasted door!" Talon shouted suddenly, snapping the book shut. "I just wanted to do it the right way, decipher the clues and be all cool, but no, we'll do it my way!" He tossed the book onto his bed roll and pulled another from his belt. "Door, book, key," he began, feeling the magic flowing through his arm as he held it out," light- Fire!" He corrected himself as a jet of fire left his hand and covered the wall. He quickly released the magic and watched as the wall glowed for a moment. He frowned. "Wrong book." He scuttled around the cave for a moment looking for the right one. "AH-HA!" He was suddenly back in place. "DOOR, KEY, BOOK, LIGHTNING!" A shimmering blue orb appeared and inch above his out stretched palm and then rocketed into the wall, followed by a crash, dust, and faint screaming.
"Great idea, heating the rock to make it easily shatter when you hit it with lightning," Someone said over by the cave opening.
"Ah, Mary," Talon sputtered as the dust cleared. "I thought you had left after going insane and babbling about gargoyles." He waved his hand in front of his face to clear the air. He had his back to what was the wall. "Jameson?"
"He got eaten last week, remember?" Mary said, rolling her eyes. "And I wasn't babbling, I told you that it said there were some gargoyles sealed behind that and there wasn't anything important to be found. You're just lucky they were paralyzed."
"Ah right, the Mogall incident," Talon said, looking puzzled and ignoring most of what Mary said. "Still trying to figure that one out. Anyways, as you can see the gargoyles are all dead, thank y-" something moved behind him and he turned, yellow lightning flying from his two front fingers. One of the three bodies had a spasm and was still. "See, nothing to worry about."
