Humans
The most proliferate of the races, humans are well attuned to the magics of the world - while naturally weak, they are excellent at absorbing and manipulating all forms of natural magic and using it to reinforce and augment their bodies. Despite, or perhaps because of the fact that they lack the sheer natural advantages of other races, humans are the primary progenitors of progress and civilization, and despite (or again, possibly because) not being as naturally gifted with magic as dragons and youkai, humanity is often the most creative with it.
Dragons
Powerful and seemingly immortal, dragons are living engines of magic, strongly attuned to a single element that they naturally create in enormous quantities, though some are capable of manipulating other elements as well. Despite their long lives and natural power, dragons are few in number, with extremely slow reproductive cycles and high mortality rates. Unlike other races, they naturally have access to two different forms - a humanoid form and that of an oversized elemental lizard, and most can shift between the two at will. While the giant murder lizard is by far their best-known and most-feared form, the majority of dragons are just as dangerous in human form, and especially among Arcadian dragons, it is common to spend most of their time in that body for simplicity in navigating areas with limited space.
Youkai
Beings of myth and magic, youkai are as varied as they are common; second only to humans in sheer number, but completely uncoordinated as a race and split into countless flavors. The only really consistent factor is that most look mostly human. Species include kitsune, arachne, harpies, oni, lamias, elementals, tengu, crows, etc. Details vary between areas and species; Kitsune are harmless wandering tricksters while others may live in small tribes; Lamias generally live in small groups in ruins and hoard knowledge; Arachne have a wide repertoire of terrible spider/webbing related jokes, harpies are often stereotyped as birdbrains (and many are) but most tengu are deadly warriors and assassins, and woe betide the man who mistakes one for the other!
Monsters
Unlike youkai, monsters only come in certain discrete breeds (Sacred Stones monsters), standardized to the point that many believe they are the product of intelligent design in the distant past - perhaps the legacy of a mad scientist or long-forgotten legendary archsage. Whatever the case, they are a constant throughout much of Elibe, and an ever-present danger in life outside of the Core. While all are intelligent - perhaps eerily so - only Tarvos are actually sentient, living in clans and tribes throughout the plains of Sacae.no playable Baels, sorry
