In the morass of the abyss, sense of self naturally tends to break down amidst the overwhelming rush of the outside - while Nether spirits are not inherently any more vulnerable to dissolution than those of the Aether, the actual rate of those who manage to gain and retain enough of a sense of self to develop into one born of darkness - an Abyssal - is incredibly low. Stranger still is the truth of their existence, that to even become them they must in some ways turn their back on the togetherness that is their birthright; while they can still feel the flow of the Nether and submerge themselves in it, the very willpower that gives them form removes from them the ability to truly return to the embrace of the Void, a fate some solve via suicide. For those who retain the will to accept their new lot in life, though, interest naturally grows in the world outside, whether in search of a new place to belong or simply understanding in existences and realms they cannot imagine themselves.
Much like the Aetherborn, to reach actual existence as one of the Voidborn is to have a driving purpose, a concept that demands to be; abyssals are existences that seek to define emotion and individuality, to understand what they are and how they apply to themselves. Much as with celestials, they begin life incomplete and acutely aware of that fact, struggling to fill those holes with... something. What it is depends on the abyssal; many find the world of Elibe to hold tantalizing hints, while others belief it lies somewhere within the Nether, at the end of a trail of hints and clues and possibilities. It tends to be an intensely personal journey, and in turn a lonely one - creatures born of shared emotion find that existence without it is strange and empty, averting loneliness either with their kind or with others from the world outside. While they are difficult to communicate with, abyssals who grow emotional bonds with summoners are almost fanatically loyal, eager to defend their lifeline to familiarity in a strange world.
Much like celestials, abyssals do not naturally age or die, with similar rules - in the Nether 'dead' abyssals are simply consumed by the tide, while in Elibe they may either be returned to the Nether or die much like mortals do, depending on whether they are allowed to dissolve or are slain directly.
Other common names for their race are Voidborn(e), infernals, and demons, in order of decreasing affection from the speaker.
