Name: Roen
Race: Human
Appearance:
Roen is a young male standing somewhat shorter than most his age, similarly trading muscle strength for nimbleness. This, along with his youthful face and long red hair, often gives him the appearance of a woman at first glance (to his occasional annoyance). He rarely wears anything particularly heavy, usually opting for cloth and leather at best. Furthermore, his clothing tends to hide the druidic markings found on his back, abdomen and upper arms (part of an initiation with his adoptive family).
Personality:
Roen is a very soft-spoken and gentle young man for his age, keeping a shy smile and a quiet manner. Having been through a lot of things in his own life, he makes it his business to help and protect others when he can. However, Roen doesn't tend to go out of his way to be an overly social person. Roen's distant attitude and careful composure, especially when it comes to his job, helps to keep himself in check through the daily pressures of life. Still, he'd rather not be alone, so he'll often force himself to swallow his fears.
Roen holds a particular attachment to animals, having been raised within nature throughout his life. He tends to lighten up pretty easily around them, especially if they're strays. More generally, Roen can be a pretty laid back guy. He greets anyone, regardless of who they are, with manners and respect. He does everything he can to make others comfortable around him, and while people tend to clash at times, Roen does his best to make up for things. Roen isn't quite the best at expressing his own interests, however, often keeping them closely guarded.
Roen takes pride in doing whatever he can and making sure that everything is perfected. He has conditioned himself to do what it necessary to protect everyone, with violence as his very last resort. The last thing Roen would ever want for himself is to see justice and peaceful means fail, or for anyone to needlessly lose their lives. Anything that can go wrong can easily drive him to the edge, and despite his immense efforts to keep under pressure, there will the the rare moment when he lashes out in anger. Every bit of failure, even the smaller ones, can easily turn him inside out.
History:
Roen's mother, Willow, had always been a free spirit, often rebellious and carefree. She and her family lived with several others on a small village, surrounded by miles of forestry. Being far and away from the Lycian Divide meant that they weren't as well-protected, but they made due with each other's company. Still, there were plenty of dangers throughout, and the village elders would often warn their fellow citizens not to venture out into the woods. Despite all they could, however, the young often dared themselves to see how far into the outskirts they could go before being caught. Willow was no different.
Willow herself has explored the forest many time over the years, dreaming of finally breaking away from her duties at home and exploring the world around her. Even as it always seemed like she was being watched in the shadows, her curiosity was never dampened. Of course, that same curiosity got her in plenty of trouble with her parents and with the elders, eventually leading to self-appointed guards being posted around the village. For a time, this put a stop to Willow's adventuring, giving her time to grow into a more confident and mature woman. She hadn't quite gotten around to settling down with anyone, still feeling that her life has been left unaccomplished.
Whether it was out of nostalgia or feeling the village life was getting too stifling, Willow once again made her way out into the forest. For a few hours, everything was as the same as it had ever been...but something was different. Many more eyes were watching the adult Willow, tracking her every move. The same few eyes that watched her and others throughout their venturing out of the village now had a more focused purpose. Before she could even notice, she was knocked unconscious by some magical force, her body dragged into the shadows.
The next few moments came at a blur, with Willow falling in and out of consciousness. What she did see, however, was something quite ominous. There appeared to be humans in robes, like they were a part of some cult. What sort of worship they followed soon became apparent by the appearance of some very strange creatures. At first, they seemed like fairies, but they were something much different. Willow could then see the faces of the human cultists dancing along to the creatures, disfigured and driven mad by whatever these "fair-folk" did to them. The next thing she knew, they all started to converge on Willow, as the whole world seemed to melt away...
It took a few days for a search party to finally find Willow, and at first, everything seemed normal enough. Life went on, but despite recovering, something still seemed off about Willow. She was left feeling weak and depressed, often finding herself without any dreams when she slept. Months later, Willow would find herself in constant sickness, eventually finding her stomach swelling with a child. Willow's frazzled mind couldn't quite recall being with anyone prior to her disappearance, and alternative possibilities came to freeze her up with horror and dread. Still, the child was coming, and given her lack of resources, she didn't have much choice but to deliver it.
On a spring morning within the village, Roen was born. As a few more years passed, It soon became apparent by his red hair and innate magical ability that he was unlike his mother, let alone anyone else that the village knew. Knowing full well of the creatures that dwell in this world, people assumed the worst of Roen's conception and labeled him an outcast. Willow was similarly deemed an outsider, rumors and spiteful comments following her and her son wherever they went. What little grasp Willow had on reality was dedicated to caring after Roen, but she knew that the other villagers would try and make a move on the both of them.
A group of traveling druids came to the village to rest one day, just as tensions were rising. Willow came to the visitors and pleaded for them to take young Roen along in secret, fearing that his life would be in danger if he stayed. They agreed, and took the red-headed child that same night. The last thing the Roen would see of his old home was the sight of villagers converging on his house, torches and pitchforks in tow. The boy was no older than five, but the memory of that night was forever burned into his mind.
Roen went through his teen years traveling with the druids, learning of their attachment to nature and all it brings to the world. Soon learning of Roen's basic magical ability, they also came to teach him of floral magic, as they themselves have been taught within every generation. Roen felt naturally in-tune with this school of magic, taking time to wield its power skillfully. Despite all this progress, however, Roen himself still felt isolated from the rest of the world. The forests were the one home he's kept for so long, and yet he yearned to broaden his horizons.
The boy soon made up his mind; he would begin to travel on his own and learn more about Elibe, while also using his magic to help others in need. This was a personal journey that he wished to take in order to better understand where he could fit in, if he was even meant to be anywhere else at all. Deep down, he also wanted to track down the location of his old home, a memory that has faded away with time, to find some answers (maybe even of his mother's fate). The time eventually came for him to part ways with his nomadic family, shortly after his twentieth birthday. Before they did, however, his druid caretakers gifted him with an age-old heirloom to carry on their legacy; a mithril rapier dubbed "Leafwind".
And so, Roen journeyed onwards as he entered into adulthood, marching towards a new chapter in his life...
Combat:
Roen doesn't offer much in terms of raw strength, and he isn't quite the most skilled swordsman around. Still, he tries to make up for it in speed and magic-conjuring. He will often keep opponents back with his magic, especially if he's within a forest area when he can easily swing and maneuver around with the plant-life he manipulates. At close-quarters, Roen lies to use vines and thorns to trip up his opponent before delivering a blow, and will often wrap his rapier up with thorned vegetation. While he does his best to keep cool, when under the stress of thing going wrong, Roen can become much more wild and offensive with his tactics.
